Media Release
September 17, 2009

On September 17, 2009 at approximately 2315 hours, the North Shore Fire Department responded to 1414 East Dean Road in the Village of Fox Point for a residential house fire. Upon arrival fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the home, and extending through the roof. An offensive fire attack was made to quickly extinguish the fire.

There were two occupants home at the time and they were sleeping. A working smoke detector on the first floor alerted the occupants and they were able to escape without injury.

The North Shore Fire Department responded with twenty-eight personnel, which consisted of four engine companies, one truck company, four EMS units and four Chief Officers. Two firefighters did sustain minor injuries and they were treated and released from a local hospital.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short within a light that was located in the second floor ceiling. For more information on this incident, please contact the North Shore Fire Department on-duty Battalion Chief at 414-228-5204.

Press Release

June 24, 2009

Three people were transported to area hospitals overnight as a result of a fire at a nine story apartment building in Shorewood.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 1600 E. River Park Ct. at approximately 10:46 P.M. and found a resident hanging from a second floor apartment window. While firefighters fought the fire in a second floor apartment, other companies removed the trapped occupant using ground ladders. The occupant was transported to Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospital-Milwaukee Campus by North Shore Fire Paramedics. The condition of the occupant is unknown at this time. Two other occupants of the building were transported; one with smoke inhalation and one other for medical evaluation.

Firefighters initiated a partial evacuation of the building, specifically in areas of the building adjacent to the apartment that was on fire. The Fire Department estimates that at least seventy-fire people evacuated the building. Other occupants that resided in apartments distant from the fire were allowed to remain in the building. The fire building is a large nine-story high-rise apartment building with multiple wings.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Shorewood Police Department and the North Shore Fire Department. Damage is estimated at $65,000.00. At least five apartments will be uninhabitable until contractors can complete clean-up work in the building. Approximately thirty firefighters responded to the scene with four engine companies, two truck companies, three ambulances and a number of Chief Officers. Additional private ambulances were called to the scene as a precautionary measure due to the hot, humid weather and since many occupants of this building are elderly with existing medical conditions.

Inquires specific to the investigation into the cause of the fire should be referred to the Shorewood Police Department at (414) 847-2610. For further information regarding other details of this incident, contact the North Shore Fire Department Operations Battalion Chief Office at (414) 228-5205 or (414) 228-5204.

An investigation into the cause of a two-alarm fire at a commercial building housing a restaurant/bar, marshal arts studio and a day spa/salon at 4473-79 N. Oakland Avenue in the Village of Shorewood continues today. Investigators from the North Shore Fire Department, Shorewood Police Department and State Fire Marshall’s Office have initially indicated the cause of the fire appears suspicious in nature.

The North Shore Fire Department was initially dispatched to a report of a fire alarm reported by a fire alarm company at 2:36 AM. The sole occupant of the building had evacuated prior to the responders arrival. Fire companies made an aggressive interior fire attack and found that the fire had extended to a second floor office space in the building. The fire was ultimately extinguished after extensive overhaul of the building. Preliminary damage estimates appear to be approximately $300,000.00.

TIPS FOR COPING WITH FLOODS

Brown Deer — North Shore Health Department officials are urging victims of the recent flooding to take the following health and safety precautions when cleaning and repairing their flood-damaged homes:

A twenty page booklet is available online from the EPA that gives simple instructions for safely cleaning your home after a flood.
http://www.epa.gov/mold/flood/flood_booklet_en.pdf

If you’re not sure when you had your last tetanus immunization please contact the North Shore Health Department at 414-371-2980.

North Shore residents with private wells which are submerged by flood waters should not drink the water. They should wait till the waters recede and then sample the well for bacteria.

Sample kits may be obtained from the North Shore Health Department. If samples
come back as having unsafe levels of bacteria present, it is recommended that the well be disinfected and then re-sampled. Information on how to perform sampling and well sanitizing can be obtained from the health department or on the Department of Natural Resources web site at: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/dwg/flood.htm
